Cummins and Danfoss Join Forces to Help Decarbonize Maritime
Cummins Inc., a U.S.-based engine manufacturer, has announced a strategic partnership with Danfoss Power Solutions' Editron division to develop standardized hybrid electric solutions for the global marine market. This collaboration aims to accelerate the maritime industry's decarbonization efforts and help clients meet evolving regulatory requirements.
Rachel Bridges, Global Marine Director at Cummins, highlighted that this partnership will deliver products and solutions optimized specifically for the marine sector. "Our customers are looking for streamlined ways to navigate complex regulations and decarbonization goals. Together with Danfoss' Editron division, we can support the marine industry effectively," Bridges stated.
Cummins has set a "Goal Zero" strategy to achieve net-zero emissions across its products by 2050. This initiative comes at a critical time as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has established a target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% from 2008 levels by 2030. In response, local and regional authorities are implementing new regulations that encourage shipping companies to transition to hybrid and fully electric solutions.
The collaboration will focus on developing standardized marine propulsion solutions, including variable-speed diesel gensets, fuel cells, and energy storage systems. Depending on the operational profile and energy sources utilized, the new hybrid electric systems could potentially reduce CO2 emissions by up to 100% compared to conventional diesel alternatives.
Erno Tenhunen, Marine Director at Danfoss' Editron division, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, noting past successes in joint prototype projects. "Through this collaboration, we're making it easier for all marine stakeholders to decarbonize their operations," Tenhunen said. "We aim to deliver a comprehensive, customized system, providing a single resource for our clients to navigate this transition."
